5 Side-Hustle Ideas with Fluid Truck

The gig economy has been completely altered by COVID-19, which is why we built a guide to side-hustles you can tackle with Fluid Truck.

Need A Truck? Borrow It!

Whether you’re gearing up to move to your new apartment, make a big run to Home Depot for your next DIY project, or an Amazon Flex driver ready to deliver, you need the right vehicle (and your hatchback is just not going to do the trick). Fluid peer-to-peer truck share to the rescue! Whatever job you have to tackle, you can borrow the truck you need on the Fluid Truck Share app starting as low as $5/hour. No more awkwardly asking your neighbor to borrow their truck, and no more standing in line for hours at an expensive corporate truck rental company. Fluid saves you time and money by helping you find the vehicle you need in just a few clicks.

Borrowing a truck on Fluid is easy and quick:

  1. Download the Fluid Truck Share app on the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Sign up and upload a picture of your driver’s license, a quick selfie, and your credit card information. The first time you rent, we’ll verify your driver’s license and credit card, which generally takes just a few minutes.
  3. Search for the vehicle you need by category, location, and availability.
  4. Reserve your truck!

Vehicle pick-up and drop-off is also a piece of cake. Once you reserve a vehicle, we’ll send you the vehicle’s location and specific instructions both via email and in the app. At pick up and drop off, you’ll be asked to take pictures of the interior and exterior of the vehicle to share the vehicle’s condition. Throughout the reservation, you can communicate with the lender directly through the in-app messaging feature.

Own A Truck? Put It To Work For You On Fluid Truck Share!

Did you know truck owners in the United States only use their vehicles 5% of the time? That’s a whole lot of lazy trucks. Your truck could be making money for you when you’re not driving it, and Fluid is here to help you do just that, backed by our insurance and our comprehensive borrower background checks.

How much can you earn by renting your truck on Fluid? Check out the average annual earnings below. With Fluid, you can pay for your next vacation, save for your new home down payment, or simply pay your bills. Your earnings will depend on several factors, including the make, model, and how you promote your vehicle.

Vehicle type Average earnings per year
Midsize Box Truck (20 ft. +) $20,400
Small Box Truck (12-19 ft.) $15,000
Van (Sprinter, TransitVan, ProMaster, etc.) $14,000
Pickup trucks $10,000

Listing your truck on Fluid Market takes less than 10 minutes. Follow these easy steps to put your lazy truck to work:

  1. “Add Item” from the menu in the Fluid Truck Share app and select your vehicle category — box truck, cargo van, pickup truck, or other.
  2. Take (great!) photos of your vehicle. Fantastic photos perform for our lenders, with borrowers reserving vehicles 3-4x as frequently when they include high-quality photos from a variety of angles.
  3. Add vehicle info, including your license plate, VIN#, make, model, and year. Create a descriptive, eye-catching title to capture the attention of borrowers, briefly describe your vehicle, and confirm the location.
  4. Choose the rate. You can select up to three rates — hourly, daily, or weekly. You’ll see suggested prices in the app, and you can check out comparable vehicles on Fluid to get a sense of pricing.
  5. Instant Book. If your vehicle is accessible anytime without you being there (for example, by lockbox), you can select our Instant Book feature to allow borrowers to automatically book your item. Turning on Instant Book is a great way to increase your reservations.
  6. Add pick up & drop off instructions. Provide borrowers detailed instructions for vehicle pick up and drop off, as well as key access, and any additional fees.
  7. Publish your listing and watch your bank account grow! You’ll be paid via direct deposit.

If Fluid Truck Share is new in your neighborhood, active promotion is key to helping neighbors and your local community learn your truck is available to rent. To jump-start your side business, share your Fluid listing (along with a picture) on Nextdoor or other community bulletin boards. This simple promotion generates on average two reservations per post and helps create repeat business. Check out our blog for Nextdoor promotion tips.

Now that your truck is earning for you on Fluid, go ahead and give it a big hug. It’s no longer lazy. #TruckYeah

Fluid Market lender uses personal touches to create great experiences for her truck renters

Lender Success: How A Personal Touch Drives Repeat Business

Lots of folks dream of visiting Paris, but Amy H. is realizing her dream of returning to the City of Lights by getting her side hustle on through Fluid. Amy H., an executive administrator at Denver-based NIMBL, first heard about Fluid in September 2017 through a recommendation on Nextdoor. She immediately saw the opportunity to earn some extra money and posted up her 2006 Dodge Ram. Amy H. now has hundreds of side hustle dollars in her pocket to help finance her next dream vacation: a return to Paris, where she and her husband spent their unforgettable honeymoon.

“I love the ease and convenience of renting my truck on Fluid,” shared Amy H., Fluid lender and Denver-based executive administrator. “All it takes is a few clicks a week and sharing a few messages in the app with prospective renters, and my Dodge is out earning for me while I’m at my day job. So many of my renters thank me for making their lives easier, allowing them to inexpensively and easily bring home their purchases from Home Depot, move furniture, and transport mulch. Fluid is an awesome and super-easy way to earn extra money.”

Amy H.’s pro tip for Fluid lenders? Go a bit further for your renters and it will pay off. “I take that extra step by making sure there are bottles of water, extra windshield wiping fluid, tow straps, and tie-downs in my truck,” shared Amy H. “I also leave my renters a note in the car thanking them for using Fluid — it’s a personal and simple touch that I see translate into return business. I’ve been amazed to see that my renters treat my vehicle well, returning it in the same condition they found it.”

With that kind of successful side hustle, Amy H. will be boarding a plane back to Paris soon!

Fluid Truck Share Lender Pro-Tip: Use Nextdoor to Promote Your Vehicle

You’ve listed your vehicle on Fluid, set a price, and arranged your availability calendar in the app. Now what? Time to let borrowers know that your vehicle is available to rent!

So what’s the best way to gain visibility for your vehicle? We recommend that you use Nextdoor to get the word out to your local community. Nextdoor is a private social network that connects you with nearby neighbors, giving you the opportunity to share your vehicle’s availability within a close community.

The numbers speak for themselves: our lenders who post vehicles on Nextdoor see more frequent transactions and have more repeat customers. Pickup truck lenders can expect to earn on average $10K per year on Fluid, and about $200 additional per month by promoting their vehicle on Nextdoor. Lenders use creative ways to engage both new and repeat borrowers, including offering $20 in rental credit through the personalized invite code in the Fluid Truck Share app.

To help you out, we’ve created this guide to walk you through best practices for NextDoor. Read on to maximize your side hustle!

Nextdoor tips & tricks:

  • Already on Nextdoor? Great! Not yet on Nextdoor? No problem, just download the app and register by verifying your address.
  • Go to the “For Sale & Free” section, where you can list your vehicle for rent.
    • Important to note: Nextdoor’s community guidelines do not allow individuals to post rental items outside of this category–if you do so, your posts may be removed.
  • Create a title for your vehicle. Make it short, punchy, and direct. We recommend something like: “Rent my pickup truck on Fluid Market”.
  • List the price — can be your hourly, daily, or weekly rate.
  • Write a brief description in the “Details” section. Be sure to include the Fluid Market link for your vehicle so potential renters can go directly to your site.
  • Add high-quality photos that show off your vehicle. We recommend you include interior and exterior photos shot in good light. Share seasonal pictures of your vehicle.
  • Post your vehicle in the “Automotive” category.
  • Finally, choose who can see your item. We recommend that you select “Your broader local area” to ensure that both your immediate neighbors and close communities see your vehicle.

Our lenders see great engagement with their local community on Nextdoor, including comments, thanks, and inquiries. To make sure that your vehicle stays at the top of the Nextdoor “For Sale & Free” feed, be sure to respond promptly to any questions and regularly post a brief comment. This will push your listing back to the top to maximize visibility.

Happy lending!

Meet The Team: 5 Fun Facts About Leo!

Every so often, we feature one of our awesome Fluid team members. This week, meet Fluid’s Lead Developer, Leo!

Leo’s been at Fluid since the beginning, and built the app (on both Android and iPhone) in just ten weeks! We’ve fondly dubbed him the CPO of the company, Chief Pasta Officer, as he’s a proud Italian/American dual citizen whose love of food is infectious.

Leo took some time out of his busy schedule to sit down with us and talk about his Nutella obsession, his love of Italy, and crypto-currency. Check out his fun facts, below!

1. What’s your favorite drink?

During the day, I love coffee. I am a bit picky about it since the coffee in the US has a different flavor pattern than coffee from Italy. I make myself a cappuccino every morning and drink Illy coffee (pretty much exclusively) throughout the day. For the evening, Spritz or a Negroni Sbagliato, which is a Negroni but you substitute the Gin with Prosecco or Champagne similar to a Campari Spritz but a little stronger. Sbagliato means “made wrong” in Italian!

2. Who do you look up to/your biggest influencers?

Michele Ferrero, the late owner of Nutella. He died at 90 and considering Robert Atkins, inventor of the Atkins Diet died at 72, I think there is a hidden message there.

3. What’s a secret talent of yours?

I cook, a lot. I make some of the best Pasta Carbonara you will ever have. Carbonara is from Rome, and my Roman friends ask me to make it for them all the time – you can’t get a bigger compliment than that. I also used to be one of Italy’s fastest speed skaters as a kid and got third at the nationals. We aren’t talking about ice skating here – asphalt and before rollerblades were invented essentially, speed rollerskating.

4. Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Northern Italy – a little north of Milan, close to Lake Como. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful places in the world, and I have had the chance to travel quite a bit. Italy has so much variety in such a small area: beautiful mountains, amazing seaside, tons of art and culture, and it’s all packed in so closely. It’s also hyper-regional when it comes to food, so every town has its own specialties that they are proud of. Touring and eating in Italy are some of my passions.

5. What do you like to read?

I change my topics of interest every few years, I go through phases. It used to be a lot of philosophy, psychology, neuroplasticity, and nutrition, but now I’ve gotten into nerdier stuff like battery technology, renewables, and of course cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
